Romans 3: 13, 14 (NIV)-Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
It’s hard changing your life. And it’s even harder to come face to face with your past. Many times though, the past isn’t as unforgiving to us as those who remind us of it constantly. On the other hand, some of us may still relish in the thought of what we used to be. Existing in the present but living in the past. It is addictive to look back but it takes the strength of God to look forward to the future. We must be very careful that as we journey with Christ that we don’t mistake our past experiences for the present and future expectations. Some of us still are tied to those very persons or things that hooked us to a decaying past. Paul in this verse today was acknowledging the principle that despite the past may be horrible, we should press toward the goal in Jesus. This is not only determination at work but a point that the writer reached where he was tired of being defined by his past. Paul, knowing fully his past, had to let go of what he was to give room for what he could become. It is a level of defiance that may almost seem delusional. How can one let go of a past situation when the evidence wouldn’t die? At this point, the devil seeks to paint your reality as your final destiny. But greater is He (God) that is within you than He that is in the world (1 John 4:4)
The truth of the matter is, what was once broken, can be beautifully restored. Regardless of who remembers a painful past, God is more than able to bring new life into any being. Unlike the judgement of others, God is more interested in second chances. God’s power is so amazing that it is almost unthinkable to think that a perfect God would rather die for you than to live without you. His love goes deeper than any of your most private wounds. His love is more persistent than the threats of the past. His love is mightier than any stronghold. There is no situation that can outpace His love for you. Yes, we all have shared a past negative activity, but God has stopped it from leading our lives and wants us to have a new destiny in Him.
